Max Lucado's series of books called Hermie &
Friends make wonderful theme units for preschool, kindergarten, and 1st
Grade. I have designed this unit for use with my own children and hope that

- Learn the “Butterfly Song” that truly fits
the Hermie book. The kids have a blast if you act out the parts such as
fluttering, fish swimming, swinging a trunk, hopping, etc.

- Print out our math
sheet.
- Print out a couple sets of the character cards and use them for memory
games or story sequencing.
- Print out our "what
is missing" worksheet.
- Print out the pattern worksheet and have the
children cut out the bottom missing pieces of the pattern and figure out
which ones are needed and which ones are extras. Glue on the
“correct” pieces.
- Print out our "what
is the same" worksheet.

- For math and geometry, make a hermie counting
caterpillar. Have the children color all the circles green or tan
depending on if they are making Hermie or Wormie. Then have them glue

You can give them M&Ms or mini M&Ms for their
manipulatives during counting. Great snack when they are done!
- Math Snack: Take pretzel sticks and have them count
out either fruit loops or green apple jacks and place them on the
pretzel stick. Put a mini marshmallow on one end to be the head and a
broken pretzel stick for antennae.
- Make a green sock puppet and a tan sock puppet
with wiggly eyes and pipe cleaners for antennae. Use these puppets for
story telling to play the part of Hermie and Wormie. Have some props
from the story for Hermie and Wormie to hold. When they are finished
drop all the props in your story telling sack and take the puppets off
your hands inside of the bag. Before hand, you will have made up some
beautiful felt butterflies and have them inside the puppets so that when
you remove the puppets off your hands out pop the beautiful butterflies
from the story sack cocoon!

to view lots of pictures of different insects with a little
information about each.
- Have the children make a book about the life
cycle of a butterfly. Use the butterfly pattern to trace a pattern onto
construction paper and cut it out
Bend
the butterfly wings upward and glue only the
“body” onto another the cover piece of construction paper for the
book. This will give the cover a 3D look. Print out he life cycle
coloring pages of the egg,
caterpillar,
cocoon,
and butterfly
and then bind your book through stapling or whatever
means seems best to you the teacher. These coloring pages on the
monarch life cycle are from Butterflies
East and West, a book to color by Paul Opler and

- Encourage the children’s parents to
take them to visit your local arboretum or butterfly preserve. For
instance within 30 minutes of us is the Mercer Arboretum & Botanic

It is completely free and you can schedule free guided tours 3
weeks in advance (though donations are appreciated). The place is
covered in about 10 varieties of beautiful butterflies.

- Print out a maze, where they will

- Make fun caterpillar crafts such as
making a chain out of construction paper to look like a caterpillar.
